Freebird

Atani defends against attackerAtani Nakai, known to her friends as Freebird throws a right leg roundhouse kick, turning her hip and supporting leg with such torque that the impact picks her opponent off the ground, there is an audible snap as bone gives way under her foot and her opponent drops to the ground screaming in pain. She spins around to face her other would be attackers, her glare clearly unnerves them, this is not the same seemingly frightened woman they had surrounded just minutes ago. The hunters had now become the hunted.

Atani looked at her opponents and understood their puzzled expressions, just moments ago she was afraid, and the fear caused her to "freeze" up, she knew what these men were planning to do, they were monsters who raped and killed Indigenous girls and women without fear of retribution. But then she remembered why she was here, she is a tribal law enforcement agent, and she is here because she made it her mission to find these animals, to ensure that there is justice for the victims, that they are not forgotten, and that these men will never harm another defenseless innocent soul.

No more! it rang in her head like an explosion as she embraced the thought that she was here to capture these men and that she was trained for this moment. Even before she knew of these horrors she had been trained by her father and she could now hear his voice in her head, the countless hours he spent teaching her many martial arts, every training session started with "imagine you're fighting for your life because someday you may have to."

That day was today and she was no longer afraid, she knew that today she would not be a victim, today justice would be served for those that were raped and murdered by these men.

All her friends call her Freebird because she loves that song and sings it constantly. She always felt at ease when she sang it so it was no surprise to her that she started to sing it just as she lunged forward and knocked out another one of her would-be attackers with a devastating axe kick.

She is now completely at ease, she looks at the last man standing, it is he who is now paralyzed with fear, she walks over to him, she is still singing and she raises her voice louder to put emphasis on the verse "Won't you fly high, free bird, yeah". She then bends her knees slightly and propels herself towards him as she lifts her lead leg and drives it into his ribs immediately rendering him useless.
